How to Easily Replace the Bottom Weather Seal on Your Garage Door
- Start by removing the existing weather strip gasket (you may also
need to replace the
bracket if necessary) using a Philips or standard screwdriver to remove
the existing screws. Be careful not to dent or damage the steel garage
door panels or to scratch the wood garage door panels.
- Next, raise the garage door to a comfortable work height for you to
take your measurements. Start by measuring the length of the garage
door.
Add 6" for each side to allow for any adjustments needed to be made.
Measure the width of
the bottom of the door and the width of the existing garage door gasket
(if possible). Do not remove the existing bottom weather seal until you
have purchased a
replacement gasket!
- First clean and spray the bottom seal retainer grooves with an aerosol lubricant product like WD-40 or something similar, this will help slide the new seal into the retainer.
- Now, start pulling the new bottom weather seal into the retainer, this is easier with another persons help to guide the seal.
- When you have equal amounts of the bottom seal on each end of the door, stop, read below note.
- You can take the extra 6" on each end and carefully tuck it back in on top of itself (this allows for thermal expansion & contraction, so you never get a gap at the door ends) or trim as instructed below for a "cleaner" look.
- Now trim any excess length
of the bottom seal gasket with a utility knife. Make sure you don't damage
the surface of the garage door when trimming the excess gasket. Also, don't let the
gasket interfere with the raising and lowering of the garage door. You will want to verify this before you continue.
- Finally, test the new garage door gasket seal by lowering the door
and checking for a continuous seal along the bottom of the garage door.
